American actress/fighter Gina Carano is descendant of a very sportive family. Her father played for the Dallas Cowboys (1977–1983) as backup quarterback and played later as starter for the USFL Pittsburgh Maulers in 1984. She played volleyball, softball, basketball and gymnastics in her youngster years. She was captain of her girls high school basketball team, who led the team to the state title. She graduated at the Trinity Christian High School in Las Vegas and graduated in psychology at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.
She had a short-term relation with muay thai fighter Kevin Ross and had an short-term relation kickboxer Kit Cope. She met British actor Henry Cavill at the Jessie J Live in London VIP reception on 4 august 2012, during the filming the Fast and the Furious in the UK. The pair falls in love and stays together untill they seperate in december 2014.
She starts with muay thai when she was 21 years old, after her ex-boyfriend Kevin Ross (a pro muay thai fighter) suggested to train with Master Toddy at the local ''Las Vegas Muay Thai'' Gym. Master Toddy recognized her talents and saw potential in the way she handled herself. She starts to compete at muay thai tournaments and becomes the first American woman who won a muay thai title in Thailand. She has a muay thai record of 12 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw. She trains also under UFC legend Randy Couture at the Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas.
She was formerly the third best 145 lb (66 kg) female fighter in the world according to the Unified Women's MMA. She is a true female MMA pioneer and is referred as the Face of Women's MMA.
Her muay thai succes attracts the attention of Jamie Levine (World Extreme Fighting) in June 2006. He gives women a nationwide platform to battle because he believes that gender doesn't matter. Jamie offers her a battle against Leiticia Pestova who has a MMA record of 11 wins and 2 loss. She accepts his offer and the fight was the first female MMA bout ever in the state of Nevada. She knocks Leiticia down in the 38th second of the first round and wins by KO.

The battle was broadcasted live on Showtime and was the first female MMA fight ever shown on cable television. She knocks her down at the end of the second round and Julie refuses to give in. Julie and Gina became good friends and training partners since that evening.
